How to Be a Writer (Step One: Believe You Can Do It!)

June 09, 2020 (Last Updated March 04, 2024)

Marcy G.

How do I become a writer and self-publish a book? It’s a question you’ve probably asked yourself countless times. You have ideas. You have a story to tell and you want people to read it. Anyone can write, but if you’re going to succeed, you need to truly believe you can do it! That’s step one. Here are some tips for believing in yourself as a writer.

Remember Why You Started

Being a creative person can be difficult. You’re constantly faced with the judgment of others and sometimes rejection seems to loom around every corner. All writers struggle with self-doubt. If you begin to feel this way, remember why you started writing in the first place. You have something to say to the world! Let yourself get excited about writing and the idea of people reading your work. Allow yourself to dream of success, and believe in your potential so your belief can turn into action.

Build a Support Network

When it’s hard to remain positive about your writing path, the encouragement of others can help. Think of a family member, friend or colleague who can help you believe in yourself when you’re feeling down about your writing progress. Talk to them when you get discouraged. You might be surprised how many people are rooting for you, and their words of motivation can help you to regain a positive focus for your writing.

Don’t Compare Yourself to Other Writers

There are many writer successes. Seeing other writers succeed can be inspirational, but if you haven’t reached your goals yet, the success of others can make you feel like you’re failing, and you might even feel like giving up. Keep in mind what you don’t see are all the private failures that occur in between successes, like rejections and roadblocks. Remember your journey is your own. Don’t let focus on successful writers make you forget how far you have come.

Practice Writing to Build Confidence

If you want to become a published author, you must keep practicing your writing. There are many outlets to do this. You can practice writing privately, start a blog and even self-publish a book! Keep writing and the more you practice and share your words for others to read, the easier it will be, and the more confident you will become with your own writing skills.

Self-Publish a Book

Want to get your book printed? There are many services available that make self-publishing easy. Once your book is written, there’s no better way to jump into action than self-publishing. Many successful authors start out self-publishing books, and you can too! Order our free Ultimate Guide sample book to learn how to get started.

As you put these tips to use and focus on your mental strength, you’ll find yourself moving closer toward your writing goals. Don’t give up! Believe in your writing skills, and you’ll be well on your way to becoming a published author.
