Struggling with writer’s block? Writer’s block is an extremely common condition amongst writers and can leave you feeling helpless and generally frustrated. Whether you’ve hit a wall or just need a little warm up, writing prompts are an effective way to get back on track, inspire new ideas, or loosen those writing muscles.
We’ve compiled an assortment of writing prompts, covering different genres. Whenever you’re feeling a little stuck, we hope you can refer to this list, choose a prompt based on your mood, and settle in for a little productive writing ‘sesh.
Feeling Mysterious
· The clock struck three and it was if the entire world turned upside down…
· You’re on a road trip and stop at a yard sale in a strange small town.
· Your character wakes up on a spaceship with no memory.
· Every morning you mysteriously receive a package that contains an item you end up needing that day. Write about figuring out who the sender is.
· You’re cleaning out your closet when you see a peculiar note etched into the back of the wall.
A Little Romance
· Write a meet-cute scene about two people who fall in love over winter break.
· Write a story about a bad date that turns romantic.
· Write a story about a princess saving a prince.
· Write a story that begins with, “We grew up together - you just never noticed me.”
· Write about your first love.
The Horror!
· Write a spooky legend about your neighborhood.
· A scene from a nightmare comes true the next day. Describe the scene.
· The teacher is a monster, but no one will believe you.
· Choose a scary story you know and add your own frightening twist.
· He wasn’t sure what the crying creature was in front of him, but he knew it wasn’t human…
Dear Diary…
· What is your earliest memory? Write about it.
· Write about your favorite family vacation from childhood.
· Write about a time when you had to stand up for yourself.
· Describe your perfect day if you could do anything.
· Write about someone you miss.
