Audiobooks and Ebooks: Popular Formats to Grow Your Audience

March 02, 2022 (Last Updated November 19, 2024)

Michael Dull

Selling books in stores or at events is an effective way to sell your book and grow your audience from the ground up. Despite the charm of physical books, many authors and publishers know the best way to expand your reach to larger audiences is through digital audiobooks and eBooks. Below, we will discuss both formats in more detail and how you can utilize both audiobooks and eBooks to grow your audience.

Publish eBooks in both formats: MOBI and EPUB

Ebooks come in two different file types, each designed for different eReaders. Converting your book into both MOBI and EPUB ensures you reach the widest possible audience, regardless of the reader device they use to purchase books.

MOBI format is compatible with Amazon Kindles. Due to Amazon’s wide consumer base across the world, selling your eBook in MOBI format provides millions of potential readers the chance to find your book. EPUB formats are used by virtually every other reader device (iPad, iPhone, Nook, etc.), besides Kindle. Sales through The Apple Store or booksellers such as Barnes & Noble will require an ISBN. To ensure posting your book to these sellers is as smooth as possible, be sure you’ve purchased an ISBN and assigned it to the EPUB version of your book.

A further advantage to eBooks is the fluidity of an eReader’s formatting and display. Your readers can alter the font to their preference, which is very useful for those that prefer larger text when reading. While you must make a decision on the font size and style for your paperback or hardcover, a reader that purchases your eBook can adjust these settings to suit their preference. Happier readers can only lead to further exposure for your book.

Expand Your Audience by Publishing an Audiobook:

Much like eBooks, audiobooks benefit a diverse audience. For some of us, it’s difficult to find time to sit down with a paper back, while others perhaps may find it uncomfortable to look at phone and tablet screens for long periods of time. Audiobooks are also great for long road trips or for readers whose workday requires long hours of driving. Not only is the “reader” able to listen to the story, the narrator often adds drama and excitement that can be lost when read silently.

While audiobooks have come in different forms in the past, such as CDs or cassettes, these days they are audio files customers can easily download and access on tablets, computers, and smartphones. With the advent of online sellers such as Audible, Apple Books, and similar services, audiobooks are more widely accessible than ever.

After deciding to transfer your manuscript into this format, you’ll then need to decide on how to create your audiobook. It’s possible to record an audiobook on your own, however, this can be very difficult if you do not have professional audio recording and editing software. In addition, audiobook services such as Audible have strict requirements for audiobooks. If these requirements are not met, they can reject the project. To avoid this, there are many online services that you can pay to record, edit, and package the audiobook for sale on a seller’s store.
