I must admit, this was a difficult assignment. I pulled 4,300 words in excerpts from the 19,000 words I have thus far in the book I'm writing. After several days, I got the 4,300 words down to 1,994 to fit your contest. I felt a little of what Reader's Digest editors must go through when condensing a classic novel. Thanks for the exercise. Sending it in soon.

We look forward to reading your submission! For future contests, we may adjust the word count limits if people find the 2,000 max too limiting. Our previous contest allowed 3,000 words. Thank you for your feedback!

Do you require something recent or can the submission be something I wrote years ago?
48 Hr Books May 03, 2021
Hi David! As long as your story is a work of fiction, as the contest requires, you are allowed to submit an old piece. We do not require the submission to be a new story or poem.

“ The prize will be awarded to the submission that is well-written and exhibits principles of good storytelling and adherence to the theme.” What is the theme of your contest? I don’t see it listed.
48 Hr Books May 03, 2021
Hello! The theme is "Stranger than Fiction" and the contest prompt is to simply, "write a work of fiction". If you have further questions regarding the writing contest, please email our marketing department at [email protected].

I don’t really write fiction. Do you have any contest for non-fiction?
48 Hr Books April 22, 2021
Hello! This is the only writing contest we have right now, but we will be having more writing contests in the future with different prompts and themes.
